 PhD ADMISSION AUGUST 2022

Applications are invited for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme beginning in August 2022. The disciplines in which these programmes will be offered are: Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Certain number of Institute Fellowships are available in each department for the programme. An Institute Fellowship for a full-time PhD student will provide Rs. 20,000/per month for the first two years, and then it will be increased to Rs. 25,000/per month till completion of the fourth year. THE SCHEDULE AND THE PROGRAMME

i.          Admissions will be held based on applications received. The last date of receiving application for CSE, ECE, and HSS is extended till 05/08/2022 (Friday).

ii.          Date of selection in online mode for CSE, ECE, and HSS is extended till 13/08/2022 (Saturday).

iii.          Shortlisting will be done based on the availability of seats and academic performance of the candidates. A candidate merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria may not be shortlisted.

iv.          There will be no support for travel for the interview.

v.          There is no application fee.

vi.          Course Requirements, if any, will be prescribed by individual Departments. But students will be encouraged to take courses. The Doctoral Committee of a student will evaluate the preparedness of a student and prescribe one or more courses that will have to be taken.

vii.          There will be a written comprehensive examination after admission to determine if the student is ready to take up research work and to determine if the student has sufficient breadth of knowledge in the discipline he/she has been admitted to.

 

CATEGORIES OF STUDENTS

 

i.                 Regular: A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree.   He/she may get a fellowship/assistantship, or may be self-financed. 

ii.                Sponsored (full-time or part-time): A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a fulltime or part-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application. A full time student will take leave from his/her institute and spend his full time at the Institute. A part-time student will pursue the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service.

 

ELIGIBILITY

For admission to the PhD Programme in various disciplines a candidate must satisfy the following criteria:

CSE and ECE

i)   Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

OR

ii)   Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.

HSS

i.          Master’s degree in Linguistics/English/Comparative Literature/Political Science/Development Studies/other relevant areas with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.

ii.        Candidates with MPhil degree/ NET-JRF will be given preference.

 

For candidates with a B.Tech/MA/MSc, preference will be given to those who have cleared GATE/NET/JRF.

 

 

RESERVATIONS (SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy layer) and PD categories): 

Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants. Reservation is as per GOI rules. OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format at Annexure-I & Annexure - II. The OBC (NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after 01-06-2020, shall only be acceptable.

 

        Fees

*The candidate needs to pay the hostel and mess fees only when a student joins a hostel. Hostel rent will be charged on a pro-rata basis (semester of 6 months with a charge of 12,500/- for the whole semester) based on when the student joins a hostel.
