ROLLING PhD ADMISSION
IIIT Guwahati is accepting applications for admission into the
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme throughout the year. Respective departments will conduct interviews as
soon as a sufficient number of applications from suitable candidates are
received by a department. The disciplines in which these programmes will be offered, with details of the
faculties and their areas, are Computer Science
& Engineering (https://www.iiitg.ac.in/faculty_cse.php), Electronics &
Communication Engineering (https://www.iiitg.ac.in/faculty_ece.php), Humanities
& Social Sciences (https://www.iiitg.ac.in/faculty_hs.php) and Mathematics
(https://www.iiitg.ac.in/faculty_math.php). Applications are accepting against each faculty and
every area of research.
THE SCHEDULE AND THE PROGRAMME:
i.
Admissions will be held
based on applications received.
- Date
of Selection: Will be informed once
decided based on the applications received.
- Shortlisting
will be done based on the availability of seats and academic performance
of the candidates. A candidate merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria
may not be shortlisted.
- There
will be no support for travel for the interview.
- There
is no application fee.
- Course
Requirements, if any, will be prescribed by individual Departments. But
students will be encouraged to take courses. The Doctoral Committee of a
student will evaluate the preparedness of a student and prescribe one or
more courses that will have to be taken.
- There
will be a written comprehensive examination after admission to determine
if the student is ready to take up research work and to determine if the
student has sufficient breadth of knowledge in the discipline he / she has
been admitted to.
CATEGORIES OF STUDENTS:
i) Regular: A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD
degree. He / she may get a
fellowship / assistantship (such as INSPIRE, NFSC, NFSR, UGC-NET, JOINT
CSIR-UGC NET, WoS, etc.) or may be self-financed.
ii) Sponsored
(full-time): A student in this category is sponsored by a
recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization
or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He / She must be a regular employee of the
sponsoring organization with at least one
year of professional
experience in the respective field. The
Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
Sponsorship letter must be attached with the application.
iii) Part-time: A
student in this category is a professionally employed person, who pursues the
PhD Programme while
continuing the duties of his/her service. He / She must
be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the
respective field. A No Objection
Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which He / She is employed must be
enclosed at the time of application.
ELIGIBILITY:
For admission to the PhD Programme in
various disciplines a candidate must satisfy the following criteria:
Computer Science and
Engineering
i)
Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology
in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index
(CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
OR
ii)
MSc (CS)/MSc (IT)/MCA/Equivalent Non-Tech
Master’s Degrees in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative
Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks having a GATE/NET/SLET score in
CS/IT
OR
iii)
Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or
equivalent in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.
Electronics and
Communication Engineering
i)
Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology
in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance
Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
OR
ii)
MSc (Electronics) or Equivalent Non-Tech
Master’s Degrees in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative
Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks having a GATE/NET/SLET score in
ECE/EE/IN/CS/BM.
OR
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s
degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or
equivalent in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks
Mathematics
i)
MA/ MSc/ MTech in Mathematics with at least 60% marks or a CPI of
6.5.
Humanities and Social Sciences
i)
Master’s degree in English/Comparative
Literature/Cultural Studies/Economics/Political Science/ Linguistics/other relevant areas with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
For candidates with a B.Tech / MA / MSc, preference will be given to those
who have cleared GATE / NET/ JRF.
RESERVATIONS (SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy layer) and
PD categories):
Eligibility
criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants. Reservation is as per GOI rules.
OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose
certificate and self-declaration statement as per format at Annexure-I &
Annexure - II. The OBC (NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or
after 01-06-2022, shall only be acceptable.

*The candidate needs to pay the hostel and mess fees
only when a student joins a hostel. Hostel rent will be charged on a pro-rata
basis (semester of 6 months with a charge of 12,500/- for the whole semester)
based on when the student joins a hostel.
